So you either say too little and hope the artist understands, or try to direct every detail because you are afraid the idea will disappear in translation.

Neither extreme gives the artist what they need. Your first job is not to design the artwork for them; it is to separate what is fixed, what is open, and what would make the result unusable.

Begin with the job the artwork must do

Before discussing appearance, explain where the work will live, who will encounter it, and why you are commissioning it. A portrait for a private memorial, a mural for a public entrance, and an illustration for product packaging may all involve a person as the subject, but they are not the same assignment.

Try to finish one sentence: “This artwork needs to…” It may need to preserve a memory, make a large room feel welcoming, help customers recognize a product, explain an idea, or become a meaningful gift.

That sentence gives the artist a reason behind your preferences. It also helps both of you decide which details serve the work and which are merely ideas you happened to mention first.

Sort your thoughts into fixed, open, and unwanted

Fixed decisions are requirements the finished work must satisfy. These might include the subject, physical dimensions, installation location, deadline, brand color, required wording, accessibility need, file format, or a recognizable personal detail.

Open decisions are places where you want the artist’s judgment. You may be open to the background, pose, composition, texture, palette, or visual metaphor because those choices are part of why you selected this artist.

Unwanted outcomes are not a second list of instructions. They are the few colors, symbols, moods, poses, or interpretations that would make the work inappropriate or painful for its intended use.

This separation prevents a common misunderstanding. If every suggestion sounds mandatory, the artist may produce exactly what you described while losing the quality you hired them to contribute. If nothing is identified as fixed, you may receive a beautiful piece that cannot serve its purpose.

Use references to explain your response, not request a copy

References are most helpful when you say what you notice in them. “I like the quiet mood and the way the subject has room around them” gives the artist something to interpret. Sending several unrelated pictures with “something like these” asks the artist to guess which qualities matter.

You can also bring references that show what you do not want, but explain the specific concern. The goal is to establish a visual conversation without asking one artist to imitate another artist’s finished work.

Choose the artist whose decisions you already trust

Do not select an artist because one portfolio image resembles the picture in your head. Look across several completed works and ask whether you trust how that person handles color, people, space, detail, mood, materials, and finish.

An artist can be extremely talented and still be wrong for this commission. A painter known for loose, expressive portraits may not be the right fit when exact architectural detail is fixed, just as a precise commercial illustrator may not be the person you choose for an open-ended abstract memorial.

Ask which portfolio pieces were commissions, what the client initially requested, and how the process changed before completion. You are listening for whether the artist can translate another person’s purpose without surrendering the strengths visible in their own work.

Let the artist explain how decisions are made

Different artists begin differently. One may start with a written brief, another with sketches, a site visit, reference photography, material samples, or a paid concept phase.

Ask when you will first see the direction, which decisions can still change at that point, and what becomes expensive to change later. A composition adjustment during a sketch is not the same request after detailed painting, fabrication, or installation has begun.

You should also ask how the artist prefers to receive feedback. One organized response from the person authorized to approve the work is usually easier to use than separate messages from several people reacting at different times.

Do not ask for the finished idea before hiring the artist

A detailed concept, sketch, or proposed composition may be part of the creative work rather than a free sample used to choose among artists. For a complex commission, a paid discovery or concept phase can give both sides a fair way to test the direction before committing to full production.

You are not paying merely for the minutes required to draw the preliminary image. You are paying for the thinking that converts the brief into a direction worth developing.

End the first conversation with a shared brief

After the conversation, write down the purpose, fixed requirements, open decisions, unwanted outcomes, intended use, dimensions, deadline, approximate budget, references, and the next decision point. Ask the artist to correct anything that does not match their understanding.

That brief is not the entire agreement. Price, payments, revisions, cancellation, delivery, ownership, and usage rights still need to be settled before production begins; the more comprehensive guide to commissioning original artwork walks through those project terms.

But the brief tells you whether the most important translation succeeded. You are ready to move forward when the artist can describe the purpose and boundaries in their own words, and you can recognize your need without requiring them to reproduce the exact picture that happened to be in your head.

<div id="td-ad-rotator-29-fac56ffe-b75e-4621-948c-cefe6f234966" class="td-ad-rotation-cache-bridge" data-td-ad-group="29"
