You can hear that the job market is "strong" while spending months looking for work, or hear that it is weakening while your employer can't fill open positions. Those experiences don't automatically disprove the numbers. They show why one national headline can't describe every worker, industry, or city.<\/p>\n\n\n
The unemployment rate, payroll growth, participation, hours, wages, and job openings answer different questions. You need to know which question a number answers before you use it to understand your own situation.<\/p>
The official unemployment rate is the number of unemployed people divided by the labor force. A person must be without a job, available, and actively seeking work or on temporary layoff to be counted as unemployed under the standard measure.<\/p>\n\n\n
People not working and not actively searching are generally outside the labor force. The Bureau of Labor Statistics definitions<\/a> explain these categories and alternative unemployment measures.<\/p>\n\n\n The rate can fall because more people find work, but it can also change when people enter or leave the labor force.<\/p>\n\n\n The labor-force participation rate shows the share of the civilian noninstitutional population age 16 and older that is working or actively looking. The employment-population ratio shows the share that is employed.<\/p>\n\n\n These measures add context when population aging, schooling, caregiving, disability, discouragement, or other forces change participation.<\/p>\n\n\n The household survey estimates the employment status of people. The establishment survey estimates payroll jobs at employers.<\/p>\n\n\n They cover different populations and can move differently in a month. One person with two payroll jobs can appear twice in establishment employment but once as an employed person in the household survey.<\/p>\n\n\n Headline job growth does not show whether positions are full-time, temporary, high-wage, local, or accessible to a particular worker. Review hours, earnings, industry, occupation, demographic, and regional data.<\/p>\n\n\n Average wage growth can also change when the mix of workers changes. It does not guarantee that each worker received the reported increase.<\/p>\n\n\n Employment estimates come from surveys and are revised as more information becomes available. Small monthly movements may not represent a durable trend.<\/p>\n\n\n Use several months, confidence intervals where provided, and annual benchmark information. Don't build a large conclusion from one release.<\/p>\n\n\n If you're deciding whether to change careers, you should examine local openings, wages, required experience, and hiring time in that occupation instead of relying on national unemployment alone. If you run a business, your own applicant flow and turnover may tell you more about recruiting than a national average because hiring conditions vary sharply by occupation and location.<\/p>\n\n\n The broader numbers give you context. Your decision still needs evidence from the part of the market you actually live in.<\/p>\n\n\n A job seeker should examine local occupations, required skills, postings, wages, and employer behavior. A business should examine its recruiting market, turnover, hours, and compensation rather than assuming the national headline applies directly.<\/p>\n\n\n Employment data describes measured groups under defined rules. It becomes useful when the reader knows which group, geography, period, and decision the number can actually inform.<\/p>\n Understand unemployment, participation, employment, payrolls, job quality, survey differences, revisions, and how national numbers relate to local
