(Something raising my niece and nephew taught me about discipline, intention, and knowing when a child needs a consequence and when they need you to slow down and teach them).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recently, I was reading something about child discipline, and it made me flash back to a time when I helped raise my nephew and niece. My sister was in college at the time, and it was a family decision to help her out and make sure she could finish.<\/p>
In all, it was a period of almost six years, from the time they came home from the hospital until my sister graduated college and got them full time. By then, the oldest was around kindergarten age and the youngest was in daycare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Question:<\/strong> How do I decide when a child’s behavior needs discipline and when it needs redirection?<\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the things I had to learn while raising my niece and nephew was that discipline is not only about deciding what consequence fits what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I also had to decide what not to discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That distinction changed a lot for me, because adults have a tendency to judge behavior by the result. Something got broken. A mess was made. An instruction was not followed correctly. Now we are frustrated, so whatever the child did gets placed into the category of “bad behavior.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the result does not always tell me what the child was trying to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I do not punish mistakes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n That has become one of my general rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If a child is being willful, deliberately disrespectful, or knowingly rebellious, then I will usually apply discipline at whatever reasonable scale the situation calls for. The consequence should match the offense, because the point is not to make the child suffer. The point is to make the boundary and the responsibility for crossing it clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But if what happened was not intentional, or they were honestly trying to do something good and made a mess while doing it, I do not see that as bad behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I see a child who did not know something yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe they did not understand how something worked. Maybe they were trying to solve a problem on their own. Maybe they wanted to help and did not have the experience to recognize what could go wrong. Or maybe they simply made the kind of mistake people make while they are learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is when I redirect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And redirection does not mean pretending nothing happened. If there is a mess, we may still have to clean it. If something went wrong, we still need to talk about why it went wrong. If their decision affected someone else, they may still need to help make it right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The difference is what I am trying to teach in that moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With discipline, I am addressing a boundary they understood and chose to cross. With redirection, I am filling in knowledge, judgment, or skill they did not have when they made the choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the outside, two situations can look almost identical. A child can make a mess because they ignored a rule they understood, or they can make the same mess because they were trying to do something kind and did not know the right way to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If I respond only to the mess, I miss the child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So I try to look at the intent behind the behavior before I decide what the behavior means. What were they trying to do? What did they understand before they did it? Did they know the boundary? Were they careless with something they already knew, or were they attempting something they had never been taught how to handle?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Those questions matter to me because I do not want to punish initiative out of a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If their attempt to help ends with punishment, the lesson they may carry away is not, “Ask for help next time.” It may be, “Do not try to help,” or, “Hide the mistake before an adult sees it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is the exact opposite of what I want them to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I want them to learn that making a mistake is not the end of the world. We can stop, figure out what happened, clean up what needs to be cleaned up, and learn how to approach it differently next time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe next time they need to ask for help. Maybe they need to seek out information before starting. Maybe I realize that I expected them to know something I had never actually taken the time to teach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That last one can be uncomfortable, because sometimes the lesson is mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is easy as an adult to forget how much of what feels obvious to us had to be learned at some point. We have done it before. We recognize the danger. We understand the sequence. Then a child walks into the same situation without any of that history, and we get upset because they did not somehow arrive with our experience already installed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I have had to learn to slow myself down before turning my frustration into a consequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And I do not always get that judgment perfect. Intent is not stamped on a child’s forehead. Sometimes a child says something was an accident because they are trying to avoid a consequence. Sometimes what began as a mistake included a careless decision they really did know better than to make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So I listen. I ask questions. I look at what they knew, what they were trying to accomplish, and what they do once they understand the result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n To me, that is part of discipline too. Discipline is not just reacting strongly enough to prove that I am in charge. It is helping a child connect intention, choice, consequence, and responsibility in a way they can carry into the next decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes that requires a consequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes it requires me to stand beside them, explain what they did not understand, and show them how to try again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Knowing the difference has been one of the most important things I have learned while raising them.<\/p>\n\n Raising my niece and nephew taught me that discipline starts with a question: did a child deliberately cross a boundary, or are they making a mistake that needs teaching and
