You took away the tablet, cancelled the outing, and delivered the consequence exactly as promised. Then the same behavior happened again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is tempting to conclude that the consequence was not severe enough. But a consequence can prove that a behavior was unacceptable without teaching your child what to do in the moment when that behavior usually occurs.<\/p>
DEXTER’S INSIGHT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Raising my niece and nephew taught me that deciding how to discipline a child comes after deciding whether the behavior should be disciplined at all. I do not punish honest mistakes. If a child was trying to do something good but lacked the knowledge or skill to do it correctly, I use that moment to educate, train, and redirect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Deliberately crossing a boundary they understood is different. It may delay a difficult task, gain attention, express an unmet need, escape an overwhelming situation, or produce a result the child does not yet know how to request appropriately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This does not make harmful behavior acceptable. It tells you what replacement skill must work well enough to compete with it. If yelling gets a child out of homework, “do not yell” leaves the original difficulty untouched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Words such as disrespectful, lazy, and out of control describe an adult’s judgment, not an action a child can reliably replace. Be specific: slammed the door, left the room during instructions, hit a sibling, or did not begin homework within the agreed time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then define the alternative with the same clarity. “Say you need five minutes and remain in the room” is teachable. “Have a better attitude” is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For several days, note what happened immediately before the behavior, what the child did, and what happened afterward. Patterns often become visible: transitions without warning, hunger after school, instructions given while the child is absorbed elsewhere, or work that feels impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You should change preventable friction where you can. A warning, shorter instruction, snack, visual checklist, or choice between two acceptable options is not “letting the child win.” It is arranging the situation so the desired behavior has a fair chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A child who is already overwhelmed is not in the best state to absorb a lecture. Practice the alternative when everyone is calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If the problem is grabbing, rehearse asking for a turn. If it is leaving when frustrated, practice saying, “I need a break,” and agreeing on where the child may go and when they return. The replacement must be easier to remember than the speech you gave after the last incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Related consequences make the lesson easier to understand. A mess is cleaned, a damaged item is repaired or repaid, and a privilege that was used unsafely pauses until it can be tried safely again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n An unrelated punishment may create misery without creating competence. Losing a weekend activity for forgetting a school folder might demonstrate your frustration, but it does not build a reliable leaving-home routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Correction naturally attracts attention, while ordinary success passes quietly. Name the specific behavior when you see it: “You were angry and asked for a break instead of throwing the controller.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends positive reinforcement, clear limits, and consistent consequences<\/a>, and advises against physical punishment and harsh verbal discipline. The goal is not to remove every consequence; it is to combine accountability with the instruction needed for change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Talk with your child’s pediatrician or another qualified professional when behavior is dangerous, suddenly changes, appears across settings, disrupts school or family life, or does not improve despite consistent support. Sleep problems, anxiety, learning differences, attention difficulties, trauma, and other health concerns can appear as behavior problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A consequence answers, “What happens because of this choice?” Lasting behavior change also requires, “What keeps producing this choice, and what can my child do instead?” When the second question is missing, making the first answer harsher often produces more fear or resentment without producing the skill you were hoping to see.<\/p>\n\n Consequences establish accountability, but lasting change also requires identifying what the behavior accomplishes and teaching a workable
