You wake up without a fever, your cough is quieter, and you can finally imagine getting through a workday. But feeling less miserable is not quite the same as being ready to return without spreading a respiratory illness to everyone around you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You should base your return on the direction of your recovery, not on a fixed number of sick days.<\/strong> Current CDC guidance says you can return to normal activities when your symptoms have been improving overall for at least 24 hours and, if you had a fever, it has been gone for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.<\/p> The useful distinction is not simply “sick” versus “not sick.” There is a period when you should stay home, followed by a period when you may be well enough to resume activities but could still spread the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During the first stage, stay home and away from others when respiratory symptoms are not better explained by another cause. A diagnosed illness can also carry its own return instructions, so follow the clinician, public-health, or workplace rule that applies to your situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Suppose you return on Tuesday because you felt better Monday, but by Tuesday afternoon your fever returns or your symptoms worsen. That is not a sign to push through because you already came back; it is a sign to stay home again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The CDC advises restarting the stay-home period when fever returns or symptoms worsen. You can resume normal activities again after your symptoms are improving overall and you have been fever-free without medication for at least 24 hours, followed by another five days of added precautions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, bluish lips or face, severe dehydration, or rapidly worsening symptoms need prompt medical attention. If you are at higher risk for severe illness, contact a healthcare professional early because treatment for some respiratory infections works best when started promptly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The goal is not to prove that you can function while sick. It is to return when your recovery is moving in the right direction, then give the people around you a short runway of extra protection while the chance of transmission continues to fall.<\/p>\n\n Use
